Medical Support Specialist / Medical Assistant
San Juan Capistrano, CA
$21 - $25 an hour
Full-Time, Direct Hire, On Site
Job Summary:
The Medical Support Specialist is responsible for managing patient
check-ins and check-outs, including verifying insurance, collecting
payments, and maintaining patient records and accounts. This role
ensures smooth patient flow and delivers excellent patient
relations. Responsibilities include assisting healthcare providers
with various tasks, managing appointments and patient charts, and
providing comprehensive information to optimize clinic
services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Support:
- Greet patients, assist with check-in procedures, and collect
medical history and insurance information.
- Prepare the clinic for daily operations by reviewing the
facility, opening system applications, and preparing new patient
registration packets and documents.
- Register patients, update records, and verify insurance
promptly.
- Determine, collect, and process patient payments; address
billing and collection issues.
- Respond to customer needs, provide excellent service, assist
with follow-up appointments, and handle medical documentation
requests.
- Schedule appointments, answer phone calls, and address patient
inquiries.
- Discharge patients by collecting balances, providing
documentation, and following discharge procedures.
- Balance daily patient charges and complete closing procedures,
including preparing and submitting reports.
- Secure financial assets by preparing deposits and following
cash control procedures.
- Maintain accurate documentation and promote a safe work
environment by reporting unsafe conditions.
- Ensure regular attendance to support efficient clinic
operations.
- Perform other assigned duties. Clinical Assistance:
- Assist healthcare providers with clinical procedures, such as
taking vital signs, preparing exam rooms, and performing basic
medical tests.
- Set up and clean instruments and equipment according to
protocol; restock exam/procedure rooms to maintain infection
control. Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including
electronic health records (EHR) and paper files.
- Ensure all documentation is complete, organized, and easily
accessible. Inventory Management:
- Manage medical supplies and equipment, ensuring proper stock
levels and storage.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs as needed. Quality
Assurance:
- Participate in quality assurance activities, including audits,
data collection, and performance improvement initiatives to enhance
patient care and safety. Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Previous medical clerical experience preferred.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft
Office.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Positive customer service skills and a well-groomed
appearance.
- Clear and articulate phone communication.
- Tactful interpersonal skills. Physical Demands/Work
Environment:
- Office environment with extended periods of standing, sitting,
and keyboarding.
- Reaching and stooping for files.
- High attention to detail and ability to focus.
- Potential exposure to infectious materials and chemicals.
- Moderate noise level.
