Applications will continue to be accepted until this date, but those received after the review date will only be considered if the position has not yet been filled.Position DescriptionThe Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in twentieth-century Mexico to begin July 1, 2025. We welcome applications from scholars who research any aspect of the history of twentieth-century Mexico, with a preference for candidates who focus on one or more of the following: environmental history, agrarian history, political history, history of science, migration, student movements, violence, gender and sexualities, or race and ethnicity, including studies of indigenous peoples and Afromexicans. Our ideal candidate will be a publicly-engaged scholar who provides transnational and hemispheric perspectives that complement our existing strengths in the history of US-Mexico Borderlands, South America, and the Caribbean, and who can also contribute to our Public History Program.The successful candidate will regularly teach the department's lower-division surveys in modern Mexican and Latin American history, and develop new upper-division lectures and seminars that cross geographies and fields, especially courses that respond to the growing interest in Central America at UCSB. They will also build intellectual and programmatic bridges with other fields and research clusters in the department and across campus, such as the Latin American and Iberian Studies Program, UC-Mexicanistas, among others. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, mentoring, professional activity, and service.QualificationsBasic Qualifications (required at time of application)The minimum requirement to be considered for this position is the completion of all requirements for a PhD (or international equivalent), except the dissertation at the time of application.Preferred QualificationsPhD (or equivalent degree) in History or a related field. Original and significant research, clarity of writing and argument; ability to collaborate with colleagues in the department and in related fields at UCSB; ability to add to diversity through teaching, mentorship, research, and service; and demonstrated knowledge of the subject in teaching and research area are preferred.Application RequirementsDocument Requirements
